Does Green Tea really prevent cancer?

There has been recent controversy as to whether green tea can prevent or fight cancer. There are studies that support this claim and others that dismiss it.
Current Status
After review of studies concerning green tea and cancer, the FDA found that the consumption of green tea had any effect on reducing the risk factor for cancer.

From the FDA:

"Under the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) "Consumer Health for Better Nutrition Initiative," the Agency is announcing the results of a review of qualified health claims that green tea may reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. Based on a systematic evaluation of the available scientific data, the FDA intends to consider exercising its enforcement discretion for the following qualified health claims for breast and prostate cancer:

"Two studies do not show that drinking green tea reduces the risk of breast cancer in women, but one weaker, more limited study suggests that drinking green tea may reduce this risk. Based on these studies, FDA concludes that it is highly unlikely that green tea reduces the risk of breast cancer"; and

"One weak and limited study does not show that drinking green tea reduces the risk of prostate cancer, but another weak and limited study suggests that drinking green tea may reduce this risk. Based on these studies, FDA concludes that it is highly unlikely that green tea reduces the risk of prostate cancer."

The FDA also concluded that existing evidence does not support qualified health claims for green tea consumption and a reduced risk of any other type of cancer.

Guidance on qualified health claims for conventional foods and dietary supplements was issued by the FDA in July 2003. FDA will continue to evaluate new information that becomes available to determine whether changes in these claims, or in the decision, are necessary."
What's at Stake?
Many researchers feel that if green tea did prevent cancer, then it would have to be consumed in large qualtities. According to the Mayo Clinic, certain animal studies suggest that consuming large amounts of green tea may be carcinogenic.

Re: Does Green Tea really prevent cancer?

I don't think the tea alone can prevent cancer. Cancer is caused by toxins and microorganisms and parasites, so I think you have to search for what is causing the cancer in the first place and not expect a tea to remove that cause.

I'm sure it helps, though.

Re: Does Green Tea really prevent cancer?

The best way to weed through the various studies done is to track back WHO did the studies. Independent researchers? The corporations selling cancer drugs?

And then consider in how many countries the various teas have been used for centuries without any harmful health affects. Why is it harmful in America, but not in another country?

Why is it mostly always the USA that studies something to determine it is unhealthy, when other countries use it safely?

A perfect example of my point is to consider the stevia safety battle in the US. For decades, the USA denied its safety, claiming studies done in the US proved it was not safe. Then, all of a sudden, stevia becomes safe because people used it anyway, it became very popular, and now the big manufacturers are using it, and all that hype about it being unsafe has been dropped.

POINT MADE??

you know the best people to ask? Email someone in China, Singapore or Japan. I bet they only have good things to say about these natural teas.

Re: Does Green Tea really prevent cancer?

I have read about it somewhere that Green Tea has been proposed as a possible treatment for cancer. It stated that green tea contains EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which not only inhibits the enzymes that helps in the growth of cancer cells, but it also kills cancer cells with no ill effects on healthy cells. Though this has not been approved widely and still under testing, but it seems that we could have some positive news.

Re: Does Green Tea really prevent cancer?

I think it is a healthy choice, for sure. It cannot harm you, so drink it for the pleasure and to be healthier. It sure beats a warm drink with toxic chemical sweeteners in it, or other nasty unnecessary chemicals. Now there's a source of cancer for you.

We focus so little on the toxic chemicals that can accumulate and cause cancer and focus too much on the good foods and drinks that can only help the body, don't we? Our focus is in the wrong places. We study green tea and stevia to death, while aspartame and sucralose keep on selling.....
