Re: Q & A with Dr. Hull - November 2009

I am new to this website and have spent an hour reading various articles and jotting down chemical names so I can be aware when buying products...my question is: Is pure cane white granulated sugar safe? I use six teaspoons a day in coffee. If so what is better? I don't care too much for the taste of Stevia which I tried in an extract form.

Ikey, try pure Succanat. That's what I have in my sugar bowl for guests. I don't add extra sugar to anything, except for special event baking. And, I use Succanat then.

You can find Succanat at a health market. It is pure cane sugar, unprocessed, right out of the fields, and it is yummy.

Try it, but only use one teaspoon; you are using too much anyway.

To answer your question: refined granular sugar is what my grandparents and parents used, and their generations had no health issues with it. I was raised on it. If you use less of it, it should be fine. There are healthier sugars - real sugar - choices. Pure agave nectar is good, too.

irene_emm - with something this serious, I really would want to do a hair analysis on your son. No guessing with something like this. But something is inside of him causing this. I'd like to see if I can identify it.

That's a lot of sugar.  Why bother with the coffee?  If it's the caffeine you're looking for, try Yerba Matte tea.  It's naturally energizing.  I drink it black.  I enjoy it.  If you're looking for a better sugar, stay away from the white sugar.  Try evaporated cane juice - it's actually a granule.  Look in the organic section of store.  The one I have is in a regular looking cylinder shape sugar container - like the ones at restaurants before the packets.  Also, turbinado is good.  Try sweetening with agave nectar - also in the organic section.

Re: Q & A with Dr. Hull - November 2009

Thank you for the advice...I will try the succanat or agave nectar. What I mean is I use two teaspoons for each cup of coffee. Not 6 teaspoons in each cup. However, I do drink 3-4 cups of coffee a day. Does the succanat or agave nectar have a bitter after taste? That is what I do not like about the Stevia extract. Thank you again for your advice. I will let you know how I like it.

I like the "Wisdom of the Ancients" brand of Yerba Matte.  I get the unsweetened.  Good luck.  Let me know if you like the tea.  I buy mine from the Vitamin Shoppe.

Re: Q & A with Dr. Hull - November 2009

Yes, this is an excellent choice. Remember that nature has created some wonderful foods and sources of drinks - nature is a wonderful creator of the healthy and nutritious foods humans need for fuel for health, but what's neat about natural foods - they are wonderful! If you retrain your palette to appreciate the textures, tastes (including salt and sugar) in natural foods - well, it's simply wonderful.

Use 1/4 the recommended amount of natural stevia because it is so strong and so sweet, it will leave a bitter aftertaste if you use the same amount that you were using of the other sweeteners.
