Caustic Soda - Your Diet Cola

Excerpt: Caustic Soda is actually a scientific name for industrially produced chlorine from the compound sodium chloride. I constantly remind consumers that sodium chloride can be found as a natural form, and as a man-made compound. There is a big difference between these two forms - the body uses the natural... Re: Caustic Soda - Your Diet Cola

"Caustic soda" is *not* industrially produced chlorine.  Rather, it is industrially produced sodium hydroxide (NaOH), AKA *lye.*  I think the confusion here lies with the fact that most chlorine (Cl2) is produced simultaneously (on the other end of the cell) via the chloralkai process (electrolysis reaction) from a saltwater solution (sodium chloride in water, ie - NaCL in H2O).  The chloralkali process is responsible for most of the world's production of caustic soda, which is a chemical that is invaluable for the production of many other chemicals.  Here's a great article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hydroxide
However, I do like your appropriate labeling of soda pop as "caustic soda!"  What a great name for such an awful thing to put in your body (it's all terrible stuff - even the non-diet fructose and sucrose versions).

Re: Caustic Soda - Your Diet Cola

It was a challenge taking this complex topic down to a small article, but it did come from my chemistry books.

Re: Caustic Soda - Your Diet Cola

In your article you state that Sucralose is formed by combining three atoms of Chlorine with one "atom" of sucrose. I challenge you to find sucrose on the periodic table of elements! It's a molecule comprised of Carbon(12), Hydrogen(22), and Oxygen(11); 45 atoms in all. Since there is no such thing as a Sucrose atom, it can not be found in atomic form.

Here's a web site that illustrates the chemical composition of sugars:

Re: Caustic Soda - Your Diet Cola

Go to the formula for sucralose in my book, take it apart, and then get back to me.
