Prostrate cancer is the condition that is caused by the uncontrolled multiplication of the cells in the prostrate. Thus, the cancer develops in the prostrate, a gland in male reproductive system. The prostrate helps to make and store the seminal fluid. Prostrate cancer often affects the urination, ejaculation, erections, and sometimes defecation. It has been observed that men who suffer with the prostrate cancer are prone to erectile dysfunction (ED). It has been observed through the study that 17% of the men having prostrate cancer suffer with ED. But, the main causes of the ED in the prostrate cancer patients are the treatments that are used to cure the prostrate cancer. It has been observed that treatment options for prostate cancer, often surgery or radiation, can treat the cancer but cause the side effect of impotence.
Around 49% of the men who undergo surgery or radiation to treat prostrate cancer are found to be suffering with the ED. Due to the ED, men fail to get the erection or sustain the erections during the sexual intercourse. The sex life gets completely devastated because of the occurrence of the ED. Men suffering with ED refrain from the sexual activity because they lose the erection in between the sexual activity. These impotent men are never able to satisfy their partners during the sexual activity. The main cause of the ED is insufficient supply of the blood to the penis during the sexual activity. The damage to the arteries and veins is found to be one of the main reasons that cause less blood supply to the penis during the sexual activity and men gets prone to ED.
During the prostrate cancer treatment the muscles and nerves, which surround the prostrate gland gets damaged and thus leads to the ED in men. The treatment like radial prostatectomy damages the nerves that are responsible for the erections during the sexual activity. Thus, after this surgery ED is observed in 90% of the patients. But, there is no need to worry because the damage is not permanent and it gets repaired naturally after 18 to 24 months. But, few cases of the permanent impotence were observed (2%). Another prostrate cancer treatment is radiation therapy which radiates certain rays that kills the cancer cells and treats the cancer. During this therapy arteries that supply blood to the penis are damaged. After this therapy 25 to 30% men are found to be impotent. Sometimes you may note the ED suddenly after the treatment, whereas sometimes it may appear after 6 to 8 months.
Brachytherapy is the treatment that is used in many of the prostrate cancer patients because of its functionality to cure it very fast than other treatments. This therapy does the physical injuries to the penile muscles which then lead to the malfunctioning of the penis during the sexual activity. There are only 20% chances of ED by this treatment. Please note that this therapy is one of the safe procedures to solve the impotence problems. Hormonal therapy is another method to solve the problem of prostrate cancer. This causes the reduction in the amount of the hormone testosterone in the men, which leads to the decrease in libido and sexual stamina in men. This therapy induces the ED in men specifically at the time of the treatment. But, it has been observed the ED is resolved as men stop the hormone treatment completely.
